Motability Eligibility

The Motability Scheme allows recipients of several government grants to lease a car in order to make them more mobile. By putting part or all of their grant towards a vehicle offered through the Ford Motability scheme, recipients can benefit from the greater mobility that having a vehicle brings.

What are the Motability eligibility criteria?

Whether you choose to drive or nominate a carer or family member, and you receive any of the following allowances with at least 12 months remaining you could qualify.

These are:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (HRMC-DLA)
  • Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of the Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Child Disability Payment (CDP-Scotland only)
  • Adult Disability Payment (ADP-Scotland only)

If you receive any of these grants, you are eligible to lease a Motability vehicle through the Motability Scheme at Dinnages.

A couple discusses Motability eligibility with a member of the car sales team. The wife is holding a hot a drink and the husband is holding a notebook. The salesman is showing them something on a laptop and everybody looks happy.

Are there any restrictions on Motability Scheme eligibility?

At the current time, the Attendance Allowance is not eligible for the Motability Scheme, but you can still apply if you receive one of the other grants mentioned above.

To apply for the Motability Scheme and use your mobility allowance to lease a vehicle, there is no upper age limit. That means that you can continue to benefit from the Motability Scheme for as long as you continue to receive your mobility allowance from the government.

The only stipulation for being eligible for the Motability Scheme is that you must have at least 12 months of your disability allowance remaining. If you do not have at least 12 months remaining of your allowance, you will be eligible to apply for the Motability Scheme once you receive confirmation that your allowance has been re-awarded for a minimum of 12 months. If you lose your award during the lease, you will need to return the vehicle.

What if I am eligible but can’t drive?

If you are eligible for the Motability Scheme but cannot drive, you can still lease a Motability vehicle. Up to two named drivers can be named on your Motability car lease and the grant beneficiary does not need to be in the car while they are driving. This means that you can choose to have a friend, family member or carer as a named driver and they can use your Motability vehicle to run errands on your behalf as well as driving you wherever you need to go.
