Pros and cons of buying a used electric vehicle

With more and more drivers switching to electric and hybrid technologies, perhaps you’re thinking about making your next car an electric vehicle. If that’s the case, buying new is no longer the only option. Far from it, buying a used electric car is becoming an increasingly common practice, especially for those who want to enjoy greater savings and a more environmentally conscious drive without a higher initial outlay.

Of course, as with any important decision, there are both advantages and disadvantages to buying a used electric car. While some of these considerations may not be so relevant to you, one could be the deciding factor. Therefore, only you can make the decision about whether buying a used electric vehicle is right for you - and knowing the pros and cons will help you do just that.

Buying a used electric car: the pros and cons

If you’re considering buying a used electric vehicle, here are the main pros and cons to keep in mind.

Pro: It’s cheaper

Just like with a petrol or diesel car, buying a used electric vehicle is cheaper than buying the latest model. Therefore, you can save thousands of pounds on an electric car by buying used, and enjoy lower running costs overall. With rapid advancements in EV technology, you can still expect to enjoy a large range compared to just a few years ago when buying used.

Con: The battery may not be as strong

If an electric car has been used for any length of time, its battery will no longer be at maximum efficiency. Therefore, a used electric vehicle won’t be as well-equipped for long distances because the range will be shorter than when new. That said, it can still make a great option for drivers travelling shorter ranges or for a daily commute. And, with newer models becoming available on the second-hand market, this is becoming less of an issue.

Pro: Maintenance costs can be lower

Compared to a second-hand gas-powered car, you can expect much less maintenance on an electric vehicle because there are fewer moving parts. Therefore, as well as saving on fuel costs, you can also expect to save on general maintenance.

Con: It’s harder to find a mechanic

Although electric power is becoming much more common, most mechanics are still specialised in gas-powered vehicles. Therefore, if you do need any repairs, you may have to take your vehicle to a main dealer or specialist.

Pro: It’s much better for the environment

Whether you buy new or used, electric vehicles offer a much cleaner, greener drive. With zero carbon emissions, you still get all the same great environmental benefits when buying a used electric vehicle as you would with the latest model.

Cons: The technology won’t be completely up to date

With the electric vehicle market still being relatively new, updated technologies are being released rapidly. That means that buying a new electric vehicle can offer a greater upgrade than would be the case on its non-electric equivalent. On the flip side, that also means that a used electric car may feel less up-to-date in comparison (even if most drivers have no need for the latest technology!).
