What is Ford EcoBoost?

If you’re looking at buying a New Ford car and prefer to drive a vehicle with a conventional combustion engine (i.e. rather than a fully electric car such as the all-electric Ford Explorer or the Mustang Mach-E), you’ve likely come across the name EcoBoost.

It is one of Ford’s engine options on many of the brand’s newest models, including many of those that we sell at our own Ford showrooms in East Sussex and West Sussex. Here’s what you need to know about Ford EcoBoost and how choosing a car with Ford’s EcoBoost technology could benefit you.

What is Ford EcoBoost?

Ford EcoBoost refers to a range of turbocharged, direct-injection petrol engines produced by Ford. The EcoBoost engine family is designed to deliver superior fuel efficiency and emissions without compromising on performance.

These engines are available in various displacements, including 1.0-litre three-cylinder versions up to more powerful 3.5-litre V6s, catering to a broad spectrum of vehicles from small cars to large SUVs

How does Ford EcoBoost technology work?

EcoBoost engines incorporate two main technologies: turbocharging and direct fuel injection. Turbocharging allows the engine to use more air to burn more fuel, which increases efficiency and power output. Direct injection, on the other hand, involves injecting fuel directly into each cylinder’s combustion chamber instead of mixing it with air beforehand.

This precise control over fuel and air intake leads to more efficient fuel use and reduced emissions. Moreover, many EcoBoost engines also feature variable valve timing that optimises engine performance at different speeds, further enhancing efficiency and reducing the carbon footprint.

Benefits of EcoBoost

There are many benefits of Ford’s innovative EcoBoost technology, including:

1. Improved fuel efficiency

With petrol prices frequently fluctuating in the UK, drivers are increasingly concerned about fuel economy. EcoBoost engines address this concern by offering superior mileage, making for a more economical drive whether you’re on your city commute or embarking on a long-distance motorway drive.

2. Lower Emissions

Ford’s EcoBoost engines meet stringent emission standards, which is especially helpful if you live near low emission zones. The EcoBoost technology reduces the overall environmental impact of driving, aligning with nationwide goals for reducing vehicle emissions.

3. Enhanced Performance

Despite their smaller size, EcoBoost engines deliver performance comparable to larger engines. This is particularly appealing in the UK, where roads and motorways demand versatile performance from vehicles.

4. Versatility

The range of EcoBoost engines means they can be found in various Ford models, from the sleek Focus to the larger Tourneo Connect, making the technology accessible to a wide range of drivers with different driving needs.
